A group of Arklatex teachers is on a tour of duty with the Marine Corps educators boot camp. One of those teachers is mentoring her young student as she prepares to join the corps. Brandie Hogan is a senior at Huntington High, and she's already pursuing her future career goals. Hogan's dream is to become a female marine. She's already enlisted and is training for boot camp. But like the female recruits on Parris Island, she's finding there aren't many women like her ready to take on the challenge. She's the only female to enlist in Shreveport in the past 10 months.

This week, Hogan's mentor, Cindy Ramsey, is hanging out with marines at a recruiting depot in South Carolina. It's the same place where Hogan hopes her dream of becoming a marine will come true. The recruiting process is the same for male and female recruits. The only real difference is the requirements for the intitial strength test.

You can continue to follow the group's journey on Education Reporter Casey Ferrand's blog at caseyferrand.com.
