Hello Marines!

I have lurked for a while (long enough to know about filling in the profile and using the search button before sullying the forum with redundancies).

1. Anyways, my questions are as such. A friend of mine has just DEPed in and will be shipping soon! I am very happy for him. He claimed that he did not need a secret security clearance for his 03xx contact but he stated that he still filled out an SF86 form! Does that mean he is getting one? Is it confidential?
I looked all over and I see only certain MOS needs a secret or TS clearance but as he had stated, he still filled an SF86 (and used my name as a reference).

2. Also, with my searching I stumbled across a forum that states that all service members regardless of rating or MOS needs a secret security clearance in order to deploy to a war zone! He is now worried because of his past financial issues and previous drug use!

I told him that most Marines go through their career without having to get a secret or TS clearance but he now thinks he knows everything since he has been to MEPS and I have not. Either way, thank you all graciously for your time and I will be referring him to this website to sign in!

Not every Marine requires secret or top secret eligibility for their MOS; all Marine, however, are required to complete the SF86 for the NACLC investigation, which can result in secret clearance eligibility barring any severely unfavorable results.

I see! Thank you for answering Master Gunnery Sergeant. I will tell him that he is safe and that he should rethink embassy duty or anything that will get him an actual background check beyond that of police records. I found it interesting from my searches that (and correct me if I am wrong) he will not be able to advance beyond Gunner sergeant (if he even makes it that far) since any promotion above E7 requires at least a SECRET clearance!

GySgts and above are only required to have a security clearance if their duties or MOS require it. Many senior SNCO's do not have a security clearance.

Goodtimes,

A typo on your part, but I just wanted to make sure you are aware that it is "Gunnery Sergeant," not "Gunner Sergeant." A typo I'm sure, but I still wanted to say something.

Master Gunnery Sergeant,

I haven't been around these forums long enough to have seen someone of your rank on here. I would like to thank you for serving an admirable 30 years in our beloved Corps. If you don't mind my asking, what was your MOS? I'm tempted to say something involving the Wing, just by looking at your list of duty stations, but then again you have "Security Specialist" listed as your occupation, so perhaps you were in Intel?

Rah Master Guns, and have yourself a fine day.

JWDevilDog that was a typo on my part. A typo that will be paid in pushups (only makes you stronger) 10 3-count pushups starting as soon as I finish this reply! (Ohh.. I forgot to mention) Master Gunnery Sergeant, I am honored that someone of your rank and stature was my first reply to my first post.

Yeah I know it was a typo. Now get on your face and haze yourself! Except you're still a civilian so hazing doesn't exist! It's the perfect loophole! *evil laugh*

No, just kidding. Pushups are good for you, though...
