Fla. Vietnam vets could finally get diplomas

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Vietnam veterans who left high school early to join the military might finally get a diploma, some nearly 50 years after they left school.
State lawmakers are looking at legislation to grant the diplomas on Tuesday.
Florida already grants diplomas to World War II and Korean War veterans who left high school to serve in the military and has issued about 3,500 since 2000.
The department doesn’t know how many Vietnam veterans will apply if the proposed law (SB 316) passes, but the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs says more than 450,000 Vietnam veterans live in the state. That’s more than World War II and Korean War veterans combined.
