Flight Jacket wins Corps-wide print journalism award

The staff of the Flight Jacket was recognized recently for excellence in print journalism as they earned the title of Best Tabloid Format Newspaper in the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association and Division of Public Affairs Merit Awards Program.

Marine Administrative Message 0164/09, released March 12, named the winners in the program, which recognizes professional excellence in print and broadcast journalism throughout the Corps.

“You were the standard setter,” said retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Renaldo R. Keene, the associate editor for Leatherneck Magazine and a judge for the large competition. “What I looked for was timeliness, base coverage and its appeal to the audience. The Flight Jacket showed the most localized news that was written well with a nice layout.”

Other awards Public Affairs Marines earned were two open photography honorable mentions by Staff Sgt. Bobbie Bryant and Sgt. George Papastrat. Lance Cpl. Christopher O’Quin earned an honorable mention in photojournalism and Marine photojournalist of the year.

“Headquarters Marine Corps has finally validated that it’s the best newspaper in the Marine Corps,” said Col. Christopher O’Connor, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. “It’s a tremendous way that the base can get information out to the community and tell some great stories about what the Marines who are stationed here are doing.”

Officials from the USMCCCA will present awards to all Merit Award winners and any Marine winners in the upcoming Thomas Jefferson Awards during a ceremony later this year at the annual Public Affairs Leadership conference in Virginia.

The Flight Jacket will represent the Corps in the Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson Awards competition next month at the Defense Information School, Fort George G. Meade, Md.
