When Linda Bramblett supports her local troops, she is not only supporting her neighbors’ and friends’ sons and daughters, but she is supporting her son as well.

Bramblett’s son, Sgt. Aaron Bramblett, has been in the Marines for three years and is stationed in the Recon Battalion in Okinawa, Japan. She said she found a way to support him, troops in the community and their parents through the Greater Omaha Area Marine Parent Support Group.

GOAMPSG was started when a parent stopped in at the west Omaha recruiting station and asked to set up an online support group. Recently the previous group leader stepped down and Bramblett took over in February. She said she enjoyed meeting the parents and eventually the online support turned into face to face meetings.

“There are many [parents] in the local area who have a Marine on active duty currently serving overseas,” she said, “and it is nice to talk with other parents about concerns that are unique to the military.”

Currently, Bramblett has a roster of about 20 to 25 parents in the support group. Many of the parents like to e-mail each other or post message boards up on the Web site www.MarineParents.com or have group gatherings, she said.

“We usually share a little of what is going on with our Marine and share photos if anyone has any,” Bramblett said. “I will let the group know of anything that is happening with the other Marine parent groups in Nebraska.”

Bramblett is hoping to set up meetings for the group at least four to six times a year and to post messages on the Web site.

“I hope that parents will know that there are others in the community who have the same concerns that they do and actually understand and that support is only a phone call away,” she said.
