2/2 Marines patrol through Camp Lejeune

3/19/2009 By Lance Cpl. Melissa A. Latty , 2nd Marine Logistics Group

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Marines from Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, conducted a three day training exercise in preparation for deployment, here, March 17-19.

The purpose of this exercise was to teach and reiterate basic infantry skills. On the first day of patrolling, the Marines started their movement to the training site using dismounted formations.

The Marines arrived at the training site after four to five long hours of patrolling through the streets and deep wood of Lejeune, but the training didn’t stop there. The squads were given grid coordinates to different training stations and operated as teams to get from place to place.

“The Marines are obligated to use teamwork to accomplish the movements between lanes,” said Maj. Michael Hays, the company’s commanding officer. “During their movement they will be faced with different enemy situations. They have to properly react to each scenario and then call up their report.”

A different skill was taught at each station such as, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, first aid, land navigation, communication, and weapons training. Following the instruction, Marines demonstrated their understanding by performing the skills, making sure they were proficient in each area.

“We have a lot of new Marines in our company, so it’s vital that each squad learns how to work together,” said Hays.

On the third day of the exercise, Marines were tested on everything they learned.

Marines had to navigate from the training site to the battalion’s headquarters, stopping at different grid coordinates along the way. At these stations, Marines were evaluated on the different skills they were taught.

“We call this part of the exercise the A-Team Challenge,” said Hays. “It takes all of the skills they have learned and puts them into a timed event.”

Lance Cpl. Steven Stricklen, who is new to the company, said he feels this exercise will help him get to know the people in his squad as well as teach him the basic skills needed to prepare for his first deployment.

This is just the beginning of predeployment training for the ‘Warlords’ of Echo Company. They are preparing to deploy later this year in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
