"American forces carried out an aggressive series of predawn raids across central Iraq today, aiming to root out groups that have been attacking American and British soldiers and to project an intimidating display of power."

"We want to send a message of `Don't mess with us,' " said Lt. Col. Aubrey Garner, commander of the First Battalion, 68th Armor, which is part of the Fourth Infantry Division.

I'm reminded of a story I heard, and which I believe to be true.

Shortly after the 5th Marines returned to Camp Pendleton from Korea, several Marines were arrested on liberty in Tiajauna, Mexico.

The CO was unabe to have them released through personal persuasion. He returned to Pendleton, sounded "dungaree liberty", loaded up five ton trucks for the "liberty call" in Tiajauna.

They returned with their fellow Marines.

It must have been a sight to behold. They were still talking about it in Tiajauna when I pulled liberty there five years later.

I think the current message the Army is sending to the Iraqis says about the same thing. Only now, it is lives, not liberty, which is at stake. I hope they get their message across as well as the 5th Marines did.

During my tour in Nam, Charlie hit the South Korean compound. The ROKs chased them for three days before catching up with them. Even during TET, the ROKs were never hit again.

Some call it "respect", I call it "common sense". It's safer to pick on the wimps. Wimps invite aggression.
