ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A war hero and aviation giant who was murdered several years ago in a home invasion robbery near Glide was honored Thursday at the Roseburg Airport.

Three marines, community leaders and members of the Marion Carl Foundation honored Marion Carl.

Marines switched the American flag flying at the Marion Carl memorial with an American flag that flew through the skies during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The flag was in the cockpit of a U.S. Marine Corps Hornet from Al Asad air base in Iraq, supporting Marinesand other soldiers, and multi-national coalition forces in the two operations.

"We lowered the American flag that was on the airfield, and we folded it, then we presented the flag that was flown overseas and raised it up on the airfield, for the airfield and the Roseburg community."

The Marines there say they were honored to be a part of the ceremony, and the flag symbolized more than just their country.

"This flag represents a lot to the community, it was flown over the skies in Iraq in a team during Operation Irqai Freedom. It means a lot to the individual person, and then it means a lot to us as Marines."

The Marion Carl Foundation has inspired many people to go into the aviation field, supporting school projects and bringing aviation pilots to speak to students.
