Productive partnerships key to Iraqi sovereignty

By Sgt. Judith Carver

The commanding general for Multi National Forces – West, Maj. Gen. John F. Kelly, discussed the current situation in Al Anbar province, Iraq at Little Hall, here, Monday.

According to MNF-W’s Web site, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) deployed earlier this year to support Iraqi civil authorities and Iraqi Security Forces to create a secure Anbar Province and enable them to be a productive partner in a peaceful and sovereign Iraq.

‘‘If Al Anbar was an island we could have drawn all U.S. forces. We’ve turned in all security to the Iraqi police; Marines are there in an advisory role,” said Kelly.

MNF-W is organized as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force with approximately 23,000 service members, as stated on www.mnfwest.usmc.mil.

The MAGTF is tremendously getting smaller, especially within the next couple of months due to the increase in security, said Kelly. We work with the local Anbari province officials and help them interact with their government in Baghdad.

The Web site for the Marine Corps Combat Development Command states their mission as being, ‘‘To develop fully integrated Marine Corps war fighting capabilities; including doctrine, organization, training and education, materiel, leadership, personnel, and facilities, to enable the Marine Corps to field combat-ready force.”

MCCDC has influenced operations in Al Anbar a number of ways, said Kelly. They control the training for everyone in the Marine Corps, and they continue to turn out what I consider the best war fighters in the world.

The Marine Corps War Fighting Laboratory analyzes current and future naval expeditionary warfare capabilities across the spectrum of conflict for current and future operating forces, according to www.mcwl.quantico.usmc.mil.

‘‘The war fighting lab has, to a large degree, won the war. Systems Command is always responding to the war fighting needs.” said Kelly. ‘‘This institution we call Quantico has risen to the occasion.”
