Indio golf tournament raises $150,000 for Marines

A golf charity tournament in Indio raised $150,000 to help America's troops.
The American Friends of Our Armed Forces raised $150,000 from a charity golf tournament Monday, said Walt Van Benthuysen, president of the American Friends of Our Armed Forces, based in Palm Desert.
About 230 golfers came to the event at the Golf Club in Terra Lago, including 72 marines sponsored by local Valley residents.
"It was really wonderful," Van Benthuysen said. "We were very near capacity in a very difficult economic environment."
"We were concerned if we could rise to the prior year, but we did."
The AFAF provides support for marines and their families at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, Van Bethuysen said.
The funds will help send technology and personal hygiene products to soldiers overseas, Van Bethuysen said.
The funds will also sponsor programs for military, such as a youth program for 1,800 children of military families, Van Bethuysen said.
