A taste of military life

JROTC cadets head for Marine camp

DeSoto County High School's JROTC is asking the School Board's permission to take a contingent of cadets to the U.S. Marine Corps training base at Parris Island, S.C., June 1-5.

DESOTO COUNTY -- JROTC cadets are going to boot camp.

Maj. Craig Burch, the senior Army instructor for the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp at DeSoto County High School will ask the DeSoto County School Board for permission to take a group of JROTC cadets to the 2008-09 camp at the Marine Corps Base at Parris Island, S.C. June 1-5.

Up to 20 cadets and two JROTC instructors will be attending the special camp. The cadets will participate in many of the regular training events as regular Marines, but no real weapons will be involved. The cadets will sleep in barracks and eat in military dining facilities, "and will have the adventure of a lifetime," Burch said.

No seniors will go on the trip, eliminating conflicts with graduation activities. All cadets going on the trip must complete all teacher requirements before they are allowed to leave.

Funding for the trip will be provided primarily by the U.S. Army, with incidental costs paid out of the DCHS JROTC fund.

* The School Board will consider a cooperative agreement between the school district and Coastal Behavioral Healthcare in Arcadia. The board has adopted a policy calling for the testing of students who participate in extracurricular activities. Adopting this policy, according to the board, was due to a compelling need to initiate programs and procedures for drug testing to deter and reduce the use of illegal drugs by students.

The state mandates the board provide free educational programs. Board members said they believe it is equally important to facilitate counseling and treatment for students who have been identified as abusing substances or at risk for abusing substances.

Under the agreement, Coastal Behavioral Healthcare will provide substance abuse services to the DeSoto School District, including counseling. It also will obtain consent for treatment forms for each referred student prior to any services being performed by CBH.

The DeSoto County School Board meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the school district offices at 530 LaSolona Ave. in Arcadia. These meetings are open to the public. Board agendas and meeting minutes are available at the district Web site at desotoschools.com.
