Hello everyone,
I am new here, but very serious about becoming a Marine, I'm joining DEP next month and have been working out regularly to prepare.

So anyways, on to my question.
When I went in for my first serious meeting with my recruiter, we talked for a while and he finally just strait out told me that I could do about anything I wanted (high asvab, good health/fitness, ect) and we finally narrowed it down to something in the field intelligence, He said specialist, my only problem is with what he told me about it it sounds like A LOT of desk work. Here in lies my problem, I can't stand desk work at all.
Is there an Intelligence MOS that will keep me in the field, Im thinking something like espionage/counter espionage, because my dream (interesting dream) is to transition from the Marines to the CIA, and become a Covert Operative (spy). Do the Marines offer espionage, or something that would include it, because I'm a very hands on person.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help,

Marshall Horton (Springfield Missouri)

Dear James Bond,

There is no job in the Marine Corps that's in the intelligence field that doesn't involve paperwork. Don't think that this is hollywood.

Request the 007 option. Seriously. Get a clue.

Oh the 007 contract is sweet...you get issued a black tux and an aston martin right after you graduate school. The pill that they give you...don't take it unless you want to die, it's not a motrin. The training is super secret squirrel though...can't talk about it here.

Look here Marshall Horton. You'll learn very quickly on this site that you need to do a little research before you post your questions on here. If you had read the rules of the site and did that research, you would have found a pretty lengthy answer to your question regarding the intelligence specialist MOS.

http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77236

Now, regarding the espionage/counter-espionage question. The Marine Corps does have a counter-intelligence MOS but it is not what you are thinking. I have many close friends in the CI community and have worked with them very closely while deployed and will tell you first and foremost, their mission is primarily to be collectors of human intelligence (Humint), not going off the grid and running their own black ops. They do conduct interrogations and they run their own sources but it also involves a lot of paperwork and requires excellent gramatical and verbal skills. If you've ever read a DIIR (Draft Information Intelligence Report) which you haven't because they're classified, you would see that not everyone would be cut out for this line of work simply for the writing that is required.

Now, you can't even joint this MOS until you've been in the Marine Corps for your first enlistment, you have to be an NCO and very good at your present MOS. Even then, there is no way to say for certain that you'll be accepted to lat-move into the counter-intelligence MOS.

Also, I think you're very misinformed when talking about wanting to work for the CIA and become a covert spy. You do not request that line of work with the CIA, they recruit you for it. Unless you are at a genius level of intelligence and possess a Bachelors degree at a minimum and are able to speak a foreign language, then you can pretty much forget about it. It's also not very bright to come in to an online forum and verbalize that you want to do something along those lines. Counter-intelligence Marines are very good at what they do and it's a fun job to have but you have to come back to Earth and realize that only the best and brightest can get into that MOS. If you can, then that's great and it would be a good building block on your way to a career with the CIA but it no way ensures that you would even be acccepted into that agency at all either.

I would say that first, you need to select an MOS that interests you and worry about making it through bootcamp. Work on your education while you're enlisted and then if you really want to have fun and work hard, try and lat-move over to counter-intelligence.

Finally, I would caution you to resist from making smug comments like your last post. When you're addressing a Marine on this site, you had better refer to them as Sir, Ma'am or by their rank. Until you earn the title, you do not rate to say what you just did. If someone says something you don't agree with, just ignore it but we could all do without the smarta** comments by the poolee's.

That is exactly what you need to do. Ignore everyone here then sign off the site and go away. You don't have to go away mad.....just go the freak away. You want to talk to service members/vets like that...... go talk to the Army. They don't mind that sh!t. Until you have a change of attitude, go play with the rest of the kiddie's at the playground. Want some advice from Marines on this site, show a little more (well maybe a lot more now) respect.:devious:

Maybe I should just send your request straight to my contact at the CIA Academy so he can just recruit you right now. I am sure he would get a kick out of reading your post. He is a Marine also. Was a cannon cocker for 4 yrs back in the 70's. He tells me all the time about some of the far-fetched stories he hears about young kids wanting to do the "James Bond" thing.

kid, you better unfvck you attitude right fvcking now! I'm not going to let you talk to Marines like that on a site that is made for us... in case you didn't notice the blue bar at the top of the page it clearly states that is for US not YOU.

if you want to ignore us, then I'm certain we all will ignore you... and when you stop showing up, noone will even remember your retarded comment... 'cause with that kind of mentality you won't make it through boot camp you little nugget.

and don't respond to anything I post... or in any thread I post in...

Well I'm pretty sure all the other Marines hit the nail on the head, several times, with their posts. However, I feel obligated to post too, just because the intelligence field is of special interest to me as well.

On the other hand, I am not going to post the information I have about the Counter Intel MOS, or the Intel field in general, as 0231Marine already posted a good link. Another reason why I am not responding is because of the respect factor.

You should understand that Marines give respect to non-Marines at all times, unless they do something to lose that priviledge. Also understand that it is difficult to detect irony on a forums website, especially when you are new and no one knows your typical posting habits.

In my mind, you have lost the respect of a good number of the Marines here. Everyone has it until they actively do something to lose it. You have lost it.

I suggest that if you want to become one of us, then you show more respect to those who have earned the Title. In other words, your joking and sarcasm is secured until we know you better. Check?
