PARRIS ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - They're usually at the head of the class but this week some teachers are the students on Parris Island.

They're learning first hand some of what it takes to become marines to use those lessons in the future.

To see recruits on Parris Island isn't unusual. But these aren't your typical recruits. They're teachers taking part in an educator workshop.

During this four day trip to Parris Island, educators from around the country get to see first hand what recruits go through.

By giving educators the opportunity to really experience boot camp for themselves, they're hoping to set the record straight.

"We have more than enough recruiters. This isn't designed to generate a recruiter. This is designed to enable people who educate and work with youth in our local areas to just know what we're about," said Maj. Phillip Ash. "And what we're truly all about is best served if you actually live it for a few days."

And the drill instructors are making sure they all get a real taste of recruit training, learning the skills it takes to become a marine.

After talking with recruits and seeing what Parris Island is all about, many like school guidance counselor Donyale Turner say they're better prepared to help her students.

"Learning a lot of the qualifications, I really didn't realize that there were so many requirements to join the military," she said. "It has changed since I was in high school.

"I feel better prepared to be able to talk to students and to tell students this is what's going on, this is how you need to prepare yourself if you want a career in the military," said Susanne Dykes.

And now taking part themselves, these educators know what it really takes to become one of the few and the proud.

The Marine Corps picks up the educators' lodging, transportation and food during their four day stay on Parris Island.
