Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Names New President and CEO
$50 Million Goal to Educate Children of Marine Families
ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Margaret Bergan Davis, a longtime leader of non-profit organizations and a decorated supporter of Marine families, was named the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (MCSF) as announced today by its Board of Trustees.
"Margaret Davis brings a wealth of non-profit organization management and fundraising experience as well as a deep affinity for and knowledge of the Marine Corps to the Scholarship Foundation. She is a very highly qualified leader joining us at the right time in our history," said General William L. "Spider" Nyland, USMC (Ret.).
Davis will oversee a $50 million fundraising campaign already in progress which aims to increase the foundation's average annual scholarship to at least $5,000 and to fully fund the Heroes Tribute Scholarship, a $30,000 scholarship award that goes to every child of a Marine or Navy Corpsman serving with the Marines who has a parent killed in the war on terrorism; and develop a sustainable income stream that includes increasing the endowment in order to serve the next generation of Marine families. The foundation will mark its 50th anniversary in 2012.
The Foundation provides college and vocational scholarships to deserving sons and daughters of Marines. Founded in 1962, MCSF has already awarded more than 22,000 scholarships totaling $39 million. For the 2008-2009 academic year, the Foundation awarded $4.5 million to 1,395 students. The Foundation currently has an annual budget of $10 million, and an endowment of $15 million.
Scholarship awards are based on financial need; the average household income of scholarship recipients is currently $41,000. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000, and can be renewed annually based on satisfactory academic performance.
The Foundation's revenue comes entirely from private sources -- donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations as well as endowment income. Significant revenue is also generated through volunteers around the country who lead events such as golf tournaments and dinner galas.
The granddaughter of a World War I Marine corporal, Davis was active in the leadership of Marine Corps family programs for more than 15 years, including participation in the select task force that created the Corps' formal family support program in 1992, membership on the Commandant of the Marine Corps' subcommittee on family readiness since 2000, and service as volunteer advisor for several major commands, including Marine Forces Europe, Marine Corps Mobilization Command and the 4th Marine Logistics Group. She was awarded the Department of the Navy Superior Public Service Award in 2008.
With 27 years experience in senior leadership, development, and advancement with non-profit organizations on the civic and national levels, Davis brings a record of achievement that spans from strategic planning and board development to major capital campaigns and annual giving. She has both held senior executive positions with and been of counsel to many national organizations. Most recently she served as associate dean for advancement at Washington National Cathedral increasing its program visibility and helping to guide its centennial celebration.
Davis was a member of the senior leadership team of the Ravinia Music Festival (the nation's oldest and most extensive music festival) under Zarin Mehta and was a development officer with Northwestern University. She also was director of the Corporate Project, a consortium of non-public secondary schools in the Midwest. As a consultant, she was instrumental in advising Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arena Stage, Shedd Aquarium (Chicago), Signature Theatre (New York), National Children's Museum, and the National Cathedral on raising hundreds of millions of dollars and achieving successful plans for their futures.
Davis succeeds Chris Randolph as president and CEO of the Foundation. Mr. Randolph stepped down in December due to health reasons.
Davis is married to retired Marine Major General Andrew Davis and has two daughters in national service, Caroline, a recruitment director with Teach for America, and Katharine, a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy.
