NEW BEDFORD — During February, the American flag atop Old Glory Tower honored the memory of U.S. Marines veteran Shawn M. Goulet, formerly of Acushnet, who died at home July 1, 2008, at age 32.

Born in New Bedford, Goulet was the son of Richard and Beverly Goulet of Fairhaven, where he lived most of his life.

He was a graduate of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School.

Stationed out of Beaufort, S.C., Goulet was a heavy-equipment operator in the Marines.

He received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense and Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

He enjoyed skiing in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He also was an avid fisherman and liked to travel and listen to music.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Ricky and David Goulet.

A disabled Army veteran, David Goulet, 31, was wounded in Iraq.

He also served four years in the Marines. A helicopter mechanic, he did two tours of duty in Iraq.

Joseph Theodore, 91, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, began the practice of flying veterans' flags atop Old Glory Tower 37 years ago.

He has enlisted the help of Linda Ferreira, a marketing representative at Ashley Ford in New Bedford, to research the life histories of area veterans, and Paul Neary, general manager of the dealership, to raise the memorial flags on the veterans' behalf.
