I had a buddy that was discharged early for college has anyone ever heard of that?

Yes, its in the Separations Manual. It is pretty hard to get though, the school start dates need to line up just right with your EAS, then you have to basically put in an admin sep package to get it. I did one a few years ago, but if I remember right the General wouldn't sign off on it so the Marine had to stick around for a few extra months.

This is exactly right.
Most 1stSgt's won't even deal with it because of the hassle.
If someone plans on doing it there needs to be at least 6 months from when they plan on getting out.
