The 85-year-old entertainer best known as Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" sidekick, was admitted to a California hospital three weeks ago, publicist Howard Bragman said.
"He's a fighter. He's a Marine. He's a strong man, and we remain hopeful at this point," Bragman told the Daily News. "He's not the type of guy you count out."
Bragman would not say where McMahon is being treated or discuss his illness, but TMZ.com reported that he has bone cancer and pneumonia.
A frequent TV ad pitchman, McMahon worked on "Tonight" from 1962 until Carson retired in 1992. He faced foreclosure on his home last year after he broke his neck in 2007 and was unable to work.
