This information is for members of Platoon 14, A Co, 1st Recruit Training Bn, Parris Island, SC. whose graduation date was 23 April 1955.
I was recently contacted by the daughter of our senior drill, SSG Eugene Chism, that her father had passed away. For those of us who are still here, SSG Chism is remembered as an extraordinary and dedicated Marine who taught us how to be Marines. Over fifty years have passed since that day in April of 1955, and I still remember his last words to us as we were preparing to depart Parris Island. As we all know, we called our Drill Instrutors sir all the way thru Boot Camp. When SSG Chism left us he said "if you ever see me again, you'd better call me sir".
I will never forget those words or the man. Things he taught me in Boot Camp have served me well for over half a century and I salute his passing and his memory. Semper Fi, Sir.
