Sugarland to play on Europe bases
By Kent Harris, Stars and Stripes
European edition, Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Sugarland, one of the most popular acts in country music, will perform a series of concerts in Europe next month, including stops on U.S. military bases.

The Grammy-winning duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush will kick off their tour March 6 at Aviano Air Base, Italy. That’s followed by shows at Naval Air Station Sigonella and Naval Support Activity Naples the following two nights. The duo then breaks away from military-oriented concerts with a March 10 show in Paris. Sugarland plays in Brunssum, Netherlands, on March 13, followed by a concert at Ramstein Air Base in Germany the next night.

All the concerts on base are free and open to military identification card holders on a first-come, first-served basis. The concerts in Aviano, Naples and Ramstein begin at 7 p.m., with the duo taking the stage at Sigonella at 9 p.m. The doors open at 6 p.m. at Ramstein and opening acts will also appear.

Sugarland moves on to London on March 16 and plays once in Scotland before finishing its tour with three concerts in Ireland.

Sugarland was founded by Bush and Kristen Hall in 2003. Nettles made it a trio and the band’s first studio album, "Twice the Speed of Light," debuted in 2004. Hall left in 2006, the same year that "Enjoy the Ride," the band’s second studio album, was introduced. Sugarland released its third studio album, "Love on the Inside," last year.

Earlier this month, the duo won a pair of Grammy awards for best country song and best country performance by a duo or group for their song "Stay." Sugarland also has been nominated for or won awards presented by the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music and Country Music Television.

According to a Billboard magazine article posted on the band’s Web site (sugarlandmusic.com), the duo recently has been performing six new songs that diverge from their predominantly country music sound. The site says the upcoming tour is Sugarland’s first in Europe.
