Henderson saluted for service to Marines

Scott Henderson of the Morris Police Department said he was not surprised when his son, Adam, enlisted in the Marines.

“He talked about joining since he was five.”

A crowd filled the Morris America Legion Saturday afternoon to welcome Adam Henderson home after five years in the U. S. Marines.

Henderson, who entered the corps in February 2004, served in the First Battalion, Fourth Marines. His service included two tours in Iraq, one in 2007 and the second, which ended Dec. 22, 2008.

“I still have buddies over there,” he said.

Henderson explained that when he enlisted, he volunteered for special anti-terrorism training, which added one year to his tour of duty.

He received a special citation for his service as a vehicle operator in Iraq in 2007, which included providing transportation to the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

“We took a lot of people around Iraq,” he said.

Henderson also spent time in Asia.

Bill Welch of the Marine Corps League in Joliet welcomed Henderson home and provided him with free membership for the first year.

The Marine Corps League is a veterans association for members of that branch of the military.

Saturday's welcome was organized by the veterans organizations and Operation Mom's Cookies.

The welcome began about 1:45 p.m. Saturday when members of the Morris Police and Fire Departments escorted Adam from his house to the American Legion. Despite the weather, he rode in the open basket on the fire department's ladder truck.

“Just my right hand got cold,” he said.

Henderson said he plans to enroll at Joliet Junior College and work towards a degree in criminal justice.
