Ohio 1954 ser# 1485
It seems that it is based on when you joined. I had a cousin that joined in 53 and his ser# was 13#####

It depends on what district and how quotas were met. Mine was 1411xxx. Enlisted in Fresno, Ca. in July 1953.

I worked in Data processing while in the Corps and from what I remember service numbers were assigned in boot campin numerical order/first come first served so to speak. I used that knowledge to keep tabs on many of my boot camp friends since their service numbers were all close to what mine was 2527xxx from november 1968....

Back in the early early 60s, that is how you knew who was a boot and who was a newbie. Serial no. They issued them as you came in, no other way.
Middy here, the reason i started this one is i have the duty roster from HMM-261 in Udorn, Thailand in 1962. i have been looking these guys up. now up to 47 its getting tougher to find. The other day i sent each of them a ball cap just like the original one we all wore back then. thanks, my post or another the replys are fun
