Trying to find any Marines who have enlisted open contract and the process in which they got their MOS. I was told toward the end of boot camp I will receive my job based upon my ASVAB scores and the needs of the Marine Corps. I was also told that if I did not want that MOS and since I received a 92 ASVAB score with above 120 on all my combined scores, I could select 3 MOS's I want to pursue and then I will be given one of those whichever the Marine Corps needed me most. Could anyone please enlighten me and shed some light on the actual process and If this is right? Thank you

If you have good asvab then I would make sure that you get a mos before you enlist. I hope you like being a cook.

You are not going to be selecting a MOS at boot camp. Somebody lied to you.

I required an rs waiver for 2 serious offenses and because of that Im only able to pick like 3 jobs which I do not want so I went Open Contract, they told me all the MOS's would be open once I get in boot camp because the waivers and stuff do not matter anymore once you are in, And since I got high ASVAB scores I would probably get something more than what I was being offered and if not i could talk to the DI about changing my MOS before graduation.

I really doubt you'll be able to get a DI to help you change your MOS. There was one guy in my platoon who did have that happen, but that was due to a medical issue, not the request of a recruit.

Maybe you didn't understand my first post, so I'll post it again.

With very good ASVAB scores you probably won't end up a cook, however that is no guarantee. I beleive I found out my MOS at the very end of Boot when the orders to the next duty station (MCT) were handed out. I'm kinda hazy on that specifically right now, but my MOS had to have been pre-determined by then to know whether I was going to report to MCT or SOI. At that time there is no negotiation with the DI for an MOS however. The DI's do not care what your MOS is. Their job is not to plan your future, just to mold it.

Sounds like I was mislead. If it werent for my waivers I am qualified for every job in the Marine Corps. Its too bad the only way I might be able to get anything desirable to me is by taking a chance with my future in an open contract ... I definitely want to be a Marine but not a Marine who got stuck with something his heart wasnt set on. Any other options...?

I'm not absolutely certain, but I don't see why going open contract would make you suddenly eligible for jobs that are currently disqualified for.

Are you going active duty? If yes, you don't pick your MOS. You pick field which has many jobs within them.

Join the Army, you could probably fly helicopters.

Seriously, if my options were between joining and having 3 MOSs to choose from, and joining and having 3 MOSs for someone else to choose for me, I'd choose for myself.

Choose for yourself. That's the only advice I can give.

I was thinking the same thing. It would seem that he is eligible for what he's eligible for, nothing more, at least until he reenlists and proves himself to the Corps. I really think he's setting himself up for disappointment.

Sounds like im gonna have a serious talk with my recruiter tomorrow to find out my options, I am in the DEP program and have signed the open contract so I assume Im obligated no matter what?

If you stand your ground, you can probly have it changed. The recruiters probly not going to make it easy, but it can happen.

Just don't go in there being an ass. Remember he's the one who puts in for your Recruiters Assistance when you get back for boot leave. He's not obligated to do so either.

DEP is no obligation program; you are free to change your mind if you choose to do so, but your recruiter won't make it easy.

So I went to the recruiter today and got it all sorted out, I signed up Ground Option and feel great about my decision in doing so, all of the individual jobs in this field suit my preferences and I will be happy to have any of the MOS's within this field. Thanks for everybodies advice and cant wait til the day i am a Marine.

Just curious, but what is ground option?

I joined the Corps with an open contract because I had some issues myself. I wanted one of three jobs and was told that due to the waivers I received I would not be able to get those MOS's. The Grunts supposedly were closed unless I waited. Couldn't get MP or Aviation tech with drug waiver. I didn't find out my MOS in boot camp. I found out my MOS in the middle of MCT. Open contract with a drug waiver and the Marine Corps made me an MP. So you don't know till you know. Once you complete boot camp and become a Marine those issue preventing you from picking the MOS that you want wont matter but u never get a choice. Unless u become company honor man, n good luck with that it's a challenge.

Ground Option for enlisted members means you have an open contract but are definitely not going to be in aviation. He could get anything from Grunt, to MP, to combat Cook, could get admin. It's a fancy way to say Open Contract.

Only way that I know that you can change your MOS in boot camp is if you graduate as the Company Honorman. You can make that your goal if you so choose, it may open up some doors for you. However, I don't like going into something blind as you are now. Just my personal opinion.
