Community steps up to support Marines
Published Fri, Feb 20, 2009 12:00 AM

On behalf of the Yellow Footprints Detachment of the Marine Corps League, we would like to thank all of the businesses in Beaufort County that helped sponsor and/or provide donations for our Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament held last October at Legends Golf Course on Parris Island.

We especially wish to thank the businesses of Hilton Head Island, Bluffton and Beaufort that were very generous in their support of this worthy cause.

Without the funding of our sponsors, and the generosity of those businesses and individuals that provided gift certificates and merchandise, the tournament could not have teed off. But most of all, we wish to thank the golfers who made this year's tournament a great success.

Be assured that the generosity of all will be used to support our active-duty Marines who are deployed in harm's way, as well as their families.

Our support in 2008 included providing four college scholarships to Marines or family members, more than $7,000 for phone cards to deployed troops, the Young Marines Program and the Wounded Marines Program. We also provide community services through our Trikes-for-Tykes, Toys-for-Tots, and Adopt-a-Highway programs.

In addition, detachment members serve as volunteer docents at the Parris Island Museum (2,800 hours last year) and show up in droves to support the families during deployments at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

We truly appreciate your continued patriotism and community spirit in your willingness to support the military.
