Recruits Complete Transformation to U.S. Marines at Boot Camp

PARRIS ISLAND, SC - NBC25's Nikki Burdine took a trip to Parris Island, South Carolina to see what it takes for U.S. Marines to complete boot camp.
She spoke with a local Marine who just graduated last week.
Recruits arrive at Parris Island in the middle of the night, being hustled off the bus on which they arrive. They start their journey to becoming a Marine on the yellow footprints.
Private Anthony Artone just graduated from boot camp. He remembers being told to get on the bus and put his head down. He said, "They say put your heads down, and we all had no problem with that, we just did it."
They endure training in the form of physical and mental tests so they can stand proud and call themselves a Marine on graduation day.
"It's the most rewarding thing I've done in my life up to this point. It's amazing to see 70 or 80 young Americans come down here as raw civilians with all different kinds of backgrounds and transition them into what we obviously know as United States Marines," said Staff Sergeant Christopher Brewer.
It's not just to make them a Marine; it's to make them a better person as well.
Jeanne Artone, private Artone's mother, said, "You could tell from his letters from week to week, he was always very doubting of himself and didn't have a lot of confidence. Now that he's done this you can tell it in his eyes, he's a lot taller and prouder, and so are we."
Brewer added, "The thing about the Marine Corps, not only do we train individuals to be United States Marines, but the Marine Corps teaches them to be better members of society."
"It's something you can't explain until after you go through it. It's just one of those things," Artone said.
The values of the Corps: honor, courage and committment, all add up to a newfound pride.
On Thursday Nikki will introduce us to another story from Parris Island.
