Station Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive underway
Story by Lance Cpl. Josue Aguirre

As the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive nears its half way mark, squadrons here are finding creative ways to raise money.

The drive kicked off Feb.1 and is scheduled to run until Feb. 28.

The station’s fund drive coordinator, Maj. Ina Laughlin, is working with squadron commanding officers and appointed representatives to coordinate various events throughout the station.

Squadrons plan to host these events throughout the month to give Marines the opportunity to donate.

Marine Attack Squadron 311, for example, will raffle off two unoccupied barracks rooms to VMA-311 Marines who donate, Feb. 26. The raffle winners will have their own room for one year, said Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Lund, VMA-311 fund drive representative.

Marines take care of one another during hard times and donating to the drive reflects being there for each other, said Lund.

Lund also plans to raffle off the VMA-311 sergeant major’s parking spot.

Marine Air Control Squadron 1 held a bake sale Feb. 11 and raised more than $200, said Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Austin, MACS-1 fund drive representative.

“The bake sale went really well,” said Cpl. Tabatha Waite, MACS-1 supply clerk.

A portion of the proceeds from the 105-year-old organization helps fund programs like the $300 no-interest, no-fee Quick Assist Loan. The society helps service members by providing financial assistance during times of need. The society also offers confidential financial counseling and can provide referrals to various other agencies.

Last year, the station raised $32,356 and assisted 1,093 clients, while lending $391,793.

As a whole, the society gave approximately $44 million in 77,000 cases across the globe in 2008.

“The fund drive is important, because the funds support an organization that gives back to Marines and sailors,” said Austin.
