New flag to honor Richland County Marines

MANSFIELD -- A U.S. flag will be raised in front of the Richland County Administration Building on Thursday to honor the Richland County Marines.

It will replace a flag that has flown the past 21 days in honor of Richland County's 40 et 8.

Founded in 1923 by World War I hero and Corps Commandant Major General John A. Lejeune, the local chapter of the Marine Corps League was formed in 1946.

Richland County's Detachment 527 is commanded by Burk Jisa, and meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building on Park Avenue West.

Jisa said the organization perpetuates the traditions and spirit of all Marines and Navy FMF Corpsmen who proudly wear or who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the Corps.

During the winter months this monthly flag raising honors veterans groups rather than individual deceased veterans.

The flag raisings are a project of the Joint Veterans Council of Richland County.

If you wish to honor a veteran in your family or a deceased member of your military post, call Bruce Phipps at 419-524-5844.
