HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — A Marine wanted by the U.S. military for abandoning his unit sneaked across the border into Canada and fatally shot himself outside his mother’s farmhouse, police said Friday.

Timothy Scott, 22, was holding a pistol when police found him in the road outside his mother’s home in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Sgt. Mark Gallagher of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

“Police spoke to him to try to talk him out of using the gun ... and unfortunately the circumstances unfolded and he took his life,” Gallagher said.

The Marine had served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and is thought to have left his unit around Tuesday, police Staff Sgt. Mark Furey said.

Cpl. Melissa McCoy, a Marine Corps spokeswoman at Camp Lejeune, said officials were aware of the case but could not release any details of the man’s military history or whether he had served overseas.

McCoy said he had been listed as leaving the unit in an “unauthorized absence,” meaning he had been away from the base for less than 30 days. After that, he would be considered a deserter.

Furey said the handgun with Scott had been reported stolen from the home of Scott’s father in Norfolk, Va., before Scott fled the U.S. on Wednesday.

Canada Border Services Agency officials in Halifax said they were investigating the case, but they would not provide any details on how a man wanted by both the U.S. military and police got into the country with a stolen firearm.
