WATERVILLE $ Players and coaches of the Colby College men's lacrosse team plan to run 108 miles Friday to raise awareness and funds for Maine-based U.S. Marines.

The 40-member team plans to leave Colby at 5 a.m. and run to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, returning to Colby around 7 p.m.

"This is to benefit the Alpha company, 1st Batallion, 25th Marine Division," said Jon Thompson, head coach for the lacrosse team. "Many of them are in Iraq right now."

Police departments from Waterville to Brunswick will escort the runners to and from Waterville to ensure they are safe.

"I just think it is a great benefit that the Colby lacrosse team is doing for our military people," Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey said Wednesday.

Massey said the 108-mile run is the second such benefit the lacrosse team has organized in the last few months. The team held a weight-lifting contest for pulmonary fibrosis that raised more than $10,000 in one day, said Massey, who took part in that event.

"I just think it shows the caliber of these young men, that they're so community-oriented and they seem genuinely enthusiastic about helping out," he said. "Colby is a good friend of the community."

Besides Waterville, Winslow, Augusta, Gardiner and Richmond police, officials from the Kennebec and Sagadahoc County sheriffs' offices will help escort the team to and from Brunswick Friday, according to Massey.

Thompson said funds raised during the run will be used to send packages of protein and other items the Marines have requested be sent to them in Iraq. He said they need support now more than ever.

"This is the time that people forget about them," Thompson said. "They are coming home in April or May and this will help in their last three months of fighting and support their welcome-home celebration."

Those donating to the run fundraiser include Colby alumni, parents of Marines, and people to whom lacrosse team members have sent letters, Thompson said.

The team expects to return to campus via Kennedy Memorial Drive, First Rangeway and Mayflower Hill Drive, and end at Miller Library on campus. A celebration is being planned by the Colby Volunteer Center.
