Marines resume live-fire training at Hansen
Officials confident stray bullet did not come from training ranges; final

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A preliminary investigation into an alleged stray bullet incident Dec. 13 in Kin has turned up no connection to any training on the base, Marine officials said Wednesday.
"The Marine Corps is nearing completion of its formal investigation into an alleged stray bullet discovered lodged in a license plate of a local resident’s vehicle in Igei District of Kin Town in December," according to a release.
"Neither the physical evidence nor the circumstantial evidence indicate that the piece of metal originated from our training ranges as part of any recent live-fire training," Lt. Col. Douglas Powell, spokesman for the Marine Corps on Okinawa, was quoted as saying in the release.
"As a result of the lack of sufficient evidence, Marine Corps Bases Japan believes it is safe to continue live-fire training," the release said.
The incident involved a report by a resident of the Igei district of Kin, adjacent to Camp Hansen, that he found a metal slug in the license plate of his car. A few days later more than 200 district residents conducted a search of the area and found a similar piece of metal.
According to the Marine statement, experts from U.S. Marine Corps Training and Education Command based in Quantico, Va., were in Okinawa from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5. They met with Okinawa prefectural police and Ishikawa police, inspected the physical evidence collected, and visited the site in Igei where the pieces of metal were discovered.
"The final report of the Quantico investigators is still being compiled and more details will be made public at a later date," the release said.
