Associated Press - February 11, 2009 4:15 AM ET
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) - Marines will conduct a live fire exercise at Camp Lejeune with a new 120 mm mortar system that is towed by a vehicle and can be hauled aboard aircraft.
A statement from the base said Marines from Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment will fire their Expeditionary Fire Support System towed mortars on Wednesday. They also will practice loading the equipment into aircraft.
The new mortars carry the military designation of XM326 and are able to fire farther than conventional mortars now used by infantry battalions.
