MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif.(June 20, 2003) -- Staff Sgt. Denise Ruiz, swim instructor, Instructional Training Company, accepts a Military Women Achievement Award from Maj. Gen. Jan Huly, commanding general, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region, and Barbara Nimesgern, president, the Navy League of the United States San Diego County Women's Council. "I am very excited and honored to be receiving such an award," said Ruiz. About 1,000 military women of different branches of service have earned the Military Women Achievement Award. Before 2003, only two military women received the award each year; one officer and one noncommissioned officer were honored. However, the Women's Council of the Navy League changed the policy this year and 54 women received this award.
