College testing center opens at Lejeune

A new testing center at Camp Lejeune will allow service members and their families to earn college credit by taking exams.
The College-Level Examination Program center offers 34 computer-based tests on a variety of subjects; students can earn up to 12 credit hours per exam.
University of North Carolina Wilmington Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said the testing center venture is the latest demonstration of the "incredibly strong partnership" between the university and the base.
"We want this just to continue to grow, and I know it will," she said.
The testing program is an opportunity for students to earn credits toward their degree, making it a little easier for some students to accomplish their goals and finish their education, she said.
"This is an initiative that serves everyone," she said.
The center can accommodate eight testers per session for three sessions a day, said Henry Wyschka, testing and technology technician. It is located inside the John A. Lejeune Education Center on Stone Street.
In January, 25 tests were taken in the center, Wyschka said. One hundred and six tests were administered from September to December.
Col. Rich Flatau, commanding officer of Camp Lejeune, said the testing center and educational facilities on base help improve the quality of life for Marines, sailors and their families.
The Marine Corps also benefits, as service members can take foreign language classes and exams, he said.
"There are some great opportunities for education," Flatau said.
CLEP tests are 90 minutes long and cost $90 per exam. The tests are free for eligible military personnel and some spouses. Call 910-451-9289 for more information.
