Afternoon Marines.
I was wondering. How do you guys like the L85A2's. I am just a curious gun nut. I haven't ever heard many pro's, and con's about them. I was just hoping to hear more about them, and maybe shoot one some day.

I've talked with a Brit about it.
He said that most don't like the bullpup design.
They were in favor of a traditional rifle design like the M-16 and variants.

How much snapping in do you have to learn? That ejection port is just below his cheek. Do they make left handed variants?

Yea I was wondering about that. I can see it's advantage in room clearing, but else were I don't know.

They look like they would be fun to shoot though.

I wouldn't want to use one in room clearing.
Speed reloads would be scary.

Brits are all taught how to shoot right handed.

a bullpup design in the length of a m-4 equals the same distance as the m-16... it lengthens the barrel.... I personally wouldn't mind the bullpup except for the mag changes... and then you're looking at limiting yourself on the drum mags... the new IAR would benifit from that being an option...

I think a designated marksman in each squad would do fine with a bullpup design m-4... he can pluck off guys from a distance and still clear a room with the rest of the guys...

The answer to your question is no. Any lefties that join British forces are taught to use the weopon right handed as a matter of course.

Although i left the Corps before the A2 was introduced i've heard good reports about it since H&K got their hands on it in direct comparison to the A1 which in my opinion really was a piece of crap. Stoppages, bits falling off it, crap magazines that were designed around the U.S pre-loaded idea but because of cost were re-used to cut costs. Now the blokes on the ground seem to be raving about it for reliability so much so that guys in specialist units such as BPT are now using them over the M16 variants.

Just a word on the FIBUA (house clearing) question, its an excellent weopon for this type of theatre due to its length and reliability!!

At SHOT show 09 this year Magpul showed off their 5.56 polymer magazine designed for the SA80

I see. It sounds like they did the same thing with that, as they did with the HK416 compared to the m16. Well that's awsome. We all need reliable weapons all around.

How was it accuracy wise Corporal? I'm guessing pretty close to the m16 from what I've heard, but what do I know!
How are the mag changes also? They look like they would be more difficult, but I guess like anything, once you get used to it's probably fine.

As i said before H&K got hold of the weopon is really was a bag of ****. They completely re-worked the working parts and the most obvious distinction between the A1 &A2 is the cocking handle

Accuracy with the SUSAT is outstanding although this was prone to misting up in sub-zero temperatures so instead we opted for Iron-sights. The Light Support Weopon (LSW) with the longer barrel and bi=pod was an even more accurate weopon to fire.

basically the men on the ground are raving about it but this is only what i've been told from friends returning from hot and sandy places

I don't know specifically about this bulpup... but I've seen ones such as the t-21 (isreali made) that does allow you to switch the ejection port from right to left.

I think that if you allow these certain modifications that you'll have a better fighting force... some times on patrol you need to switch... guys on the right should be able to fire from the left shoulder so they fire outboard easier... otherwise you have guys walking backwards... plus many other minor issues....

P.S. I understand switching the ports isn't exactly easy to do on the fly... but having lefties would make that column formation a bit more effective IMO

Is this still being taught?

I hated everything about that tasty bit of doctrine.

A brass deflector would be much easier.

well to be honest.... I haven't learned anything of the sort since 2003.... any young devil dogs want to answer this?
