History is being made this month right off our coast. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit are training with the French Navy this month on their 22,000 ton ship.

For the very first time US Marines are hauling tanks on board the FS Tonnerre. This electric motor run ship can also land up to six military choppers. Marines and sailors will practice working with the French Navy until the end of the month. The goal of the training is to practice working together as allies.

CW3 Steven Dancer says, “The world is a joint battlefield. There is never going to be the US alone. More than likely we will be with our NATO counterparts and it’s better to learn together now in peace during exercises like this so we can be more efficient when it comes time to do the real thing.“

The French Navy’s ship is only two years old and has state of the art facilities inside such as a fully equipped hospital.
