Save Ewa Marine Corps Air Field Bill to Be Heard Tomorrow
HB 1407 Proposes to Place First WWII Battle Site on State Historic Register
By Rep. Kymberly Pine, R-Ewa, 2/5/2009 9:42:46 AM

WWII Marines may finally get the recognition they deserve if House Bill 1407 passes.

HB1407 proposes to have the Legislature place the Ewa Air Station on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places.

WWII historian and Ewa Beach resident, John Bond, who has led the call to get the site preserved said, "This battle ground has the potential to offer generations to come a hands-on experience that ties in the significance of the air field and role it had in the theatre. We must never forget the sacrifices that were borne from it."

I introduced this bill because I believe we must make every attempt to honor the memory of the Marines and Ewa residents who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. Many people do not know that Ewa is where the Japanese attacked first before they made their way to Pearl Harbor.

The Ewa Marine Core Air Station has remained in ruins yet continues to be a place of pilgrimage and inflection for many Pearl Harbor and WWII survivors alike.

A hearing on the measure has been scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on February 5 by the committee on Economic Revitalization, Business & Military Affairs.

Representative Kymberly Marcos Pine is the Assistant Republican Leader and represents the 43rd District including West Loch Fairways & Village, Ewa By Gentry, Ocean Pointe, Pu'uloa, Iroquois Point, Ewa Beach. Reach her at mailto:reppine@capitol.hawaii.gov
