SC bill enhances custody rights for parents

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Military members could possibly get greater child visitation and custody rights in South Carolina.
A bill sent to the Senate floor Tuesday would ensure military parents face fewer fights when they want to visit children in the custody of a former spouse when they’re on leave or temporarily in the state.
The legislation requires the parent with custody to make children available for visits while the service member is on leave. It applies only to service members when they are on active duty and deployed.
The legislation also bars courts from modifying or issuing final custody orders while service members are overseas and unable to argue their cases in a family court.
