Sarnoff Awarded U.S. Marine Corps War Fighting Laboratory Contract To Demonstrate Advanced 360 Degree Camera System
Prototype C4ISR System Provides Real-Time Sensor Fusion and Automatic Threat Detection For Superior Situational Understanding

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sarnoff Corporation today announced it has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Marine Corps War Fighting Laboratory to demonstrate an advanced 360 degree modular camera array prototype, the Computer-Vision Assisted Combat Capability (CVAC2) system. CVAC2 is a C4ISR enabler that will help the Marines achieve unmatched situational understanding as well as automated threat detection and avoidance.

CVAC2 features a modular, stand alone design with its own touch screen controls, power, and monitor that can be mounted on military vehicles or portable tripods. At the heart of CVAC2 is Sarnoff’s Acadia® I ASIC vision accelerator, which gives the system its image fusion and processing power. CVAC2 is able to integrate the outputs of 29 different sensors, including visual, acoustic, infrared, and laser sensors into one interactive display, all in real time. The system’s 360 degree camera coverage responds to perceived threats by automatically tracking and alerting operators to suspicious activity while recording video information for later analysis.

“Current C4ISR camera solutions typically rely on a single sensor and lack mobility, making them a poor choice to support dynamic combat operations,” said Dr. Don Newsome, President and CEO of Sarnoff Corporation. “The CVAC2 camera system is easily movable and fuses a large variety of sensor inputs into one real-time, 360 degree common operating picture. The system’s fast, flexible and effective vision-based capabilities mean the US Marines can rely on CVAC2 for successful Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain (MOUT).”

Real-time processing and multi-sensor integration enables CVAC2 to quickly cue and slew sensors to the perceived threat and to rapidly communicate threat information between CVAC2 units, dismounted troops, and operational commanders. This combined capability makes CVAC2 a force multiplier by reducing the operators’ workload and allowing them to take quick, decisive action against the enemy. CVAC2 provides persistent situational awareness for convoy operations; perimeter and base defense; checkpoint security, and offensive operations. Additionally, CVAC2 will capture hours of multi-sensor digital video, threat information, and intelligence data to support post mission analysis, mission rehearsal, training, intelligence analysis, and forensic investigation.
