Troops In Iraq Allowed Two Beers For Super Bowl

Miami, FL (AHN) - U.S troops watching the Super Bowl in Iraq will be able to consume two beers while enjoying the game Sunday.

Army Gen. Ray Odierno, the U.S. commander in Iraq, issued a waiver to a strict ban on U.S. service members drinking alcohol while serving in a war zone.

More than 15,000 cases of beer have been shipped to Iraq for the game, which airs at 2 p.m. Iraq time. The beer will be served free to troops in dining halls on their bases, the Army Times reported.

The waiver doesn't apply to soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors in Afghanistan, but about 2,000 pizzas have been sent to that country by the non-profit organization, Pizzas 4 Patriots.

The ban on alcohol in war zones is also heavily rooted in not offending Muslim host nations.

One Army reservist told the Kansas City Star that if Obama ran on getting beer to troops in war zones, "he'd have been the first Democrat that the military would have voted for en masse."
