DETROIT - Veterans from Michigan and Indiana are among those traveling to West Virginia to erect a 25-foot flagpole at the home of the last known living American-born veteran of World War I.

The Detroit Free Press reports the group heading to 107-year-old Frank W. Buckles' Charles Town, W.Va., home with the nonprofit Lest We Forget is being joined by Bob Heft of Saginaw, the designer of the 50-star American flag.

They plan to erect the flagpole Friday. It is scheduled to be dedicated Saturday with a flag-raising ceremony as a gift for Buckles, whose birthday is Sunday.

Buckles visited a string of military recruiters after the United States entered the war. He was rejected by the Marines and the Navy, but eventually convinced an Army captain he was 18 and enlisted.
