NORFOLK

The French command and projection ship Tonnerre is due to arrive at Norfolk Naval Station on Tuesday to participate in the Bataan Expeditionary Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercise off the North Carolina coast Feb. 3-27.

Tonnerre and other French units will train with U.S. sailors and Marines. The exercise aims to provide a realistic training environment similar to what ships encounter on deployment.

The strike group is comprised of the amphibious assault ship Bataan, amphibious transport dock ship Ponce, amphibious dock landing ship Fort McHenry, guided-missile cruiser Anzio, guided-missile destroyers Porter and James E. Williams; the Los Angeles-class attack submarine San Juan and a Marine Landing Force from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Also participating will be the supply ship Kanawha, frigates Carr, Doyle, Hawes, Kauffman, Nicholas and Simpson; Los Angeles-class attack Boise; destroyers Carney, Cole, and Bulkeley; and the French frigate La Motte-Picquet.
