Dell computer customers in eastern North Carolina may be eligible for refunds this year after the Texas-based company reached an agreement this week with a group of the country's attorneys general.

Thirty-four U.S. attorneys general received complaints from customers who had problems with financing plans, rebate offers and technical support, said Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for Roy Cooper, North Carolina's attorney general.

Dell Inc. and Dell Financial Services LLC agreed to pay $1.5 million in refunds to customers in 47 states, said David Frink, a spokesman for the company. The organizations will also pay $1.85 million to states, including $75,000 to North Carolina, to cover the costs of investigations.

"The amount of money individual consumers get will depend on the number of eligible recipients and the total amount claimed as refunds," Talley said. "We don't know yet."

Customers must have bought a Dell product between April 1, 2005, and April 13, 2009, to receive a refund.

Customers who believe they are eligible for a refund can download a claim form at www.ncdoj.gov or call the state attorney general's consumer protection division at 877-566-7226. Claims must be filed by April 13.
