FORT PICKETT -- The Marine Corps' 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit completed more than two weeks of intense training in central Virginia yesterday.

The unit will begin moving back to its home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The training was designed to sharpen skills for combat in urbanized areas for about 2,200 Marines and sailors before the amphibious outfit deploys overseas this spring.

The majority of the Marines arrived here Jan. 8 and began conducting urban familiarization flights and landings in Henrico County, Lawrenceville, Farmville and other locations in the region.

Pilots and crews flew helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft from Fort Pickett, taking advantage of the Virginia terrain and populated settings to practice navigating and landing in built-up landing zones, the Marines said.

The unit also conducted a series of precision training raids at Pickett, Franklin and Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County.
