Jamestown Marine receives award

Cpl. Craig R. Fryer United States Marine Corps, Jamestown, received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal on Sept. 30, 2008, for “professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties.”
Fryer is the son of Steve and Shari Wagoner, Jamestown. He joined the Marines about two years ago, inspired to become a Marine after the combat death of his high school classmate Lance Cpl. Leon Deraps.
At the time Cpl. Fryer received the medal he had the rank of Lance Corporal and was serving as Watch Officer, Third Platoon, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
According to the certificate accompanying the medal, Fryer was assigned billets far exceeding his grade, performed his duties in an exemplary manner requiring little or no supervision.
Among other successful tasks, he coordinated 1,016 Explosive Ordinance Response calls, and as Communications Chief, maintained tracker devices and various radios. He also, as Facilities Maintenance Chief, coordinated with adjacent units and civilian contractors, facilitated responsive maintenance for five explosive ordinance disposal compounds.
In all of this, he contributed to the platoon's combat effectiveness and met the “highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Reserve.”
Corporal Fryer returned from Iraq about Christmas and expects to be deployed to Afghanistan in the near future. He has taken FBI pre-test to qualify and is seriously considering the FBI as a career when he completes his service in two years.
His younger brother Jake Campbell has joined the Army National Guard and his youngest brother Justin Campbell will be going to Marine Corps Boot Camp in June.
