Jesse Johnson, a 2008 Spring Lake High School graduate, has achieved outstanding athletic achievement through the United States Marine Corps.

Johnson is stationed with the Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton, Calif. During his service, Johnson has seen a lot of time playing goalie for the Camp Pendleton varsity soccer team.

The team has enjoyed success playing in tournaments in Temecula and San Diego, Calif., and most recently in Yuma, Ariz.

While playing in Yuma, Johnson was one of 11 players recruited to try out for the All-Marine soccer team. The team is currently wrapping up tryouts involving 150 potential players in Cherry Point, N.C. The tryouts consist of 6-8 hour workouts a day, along with scrimmages against neighboring college teams.

Johnson will learn if he has made the final cut on Wednesday and the team will travel across the country playing against other military All-Star and semi-pro teams.

NAUTA A MEMBER OF UNBEATEN PANTHERS

Taylor Nauta enjoyed tremendous team success on the hardwood at Grand Haven High School and it has continued at the college level.

Nauta, a 2008 Grand Haven High School graduate, is a freshman forward on the Davenport University women's basketball team — a squad that has compiled an 18-0 record this season and is currently ranked No. 3 in the NAIA.

It is the highest ranking ever for a Wolverine-Hooser Athletic Conference women's team.

The Panthers have simply dominated their competition, outscoring their opponents by an average of 86.5 to 63.6 per game.

Nauta has seen game action in eight of the Panthers' contests and has scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in an average of only 3.8 minutes per contest.

Davenport will dedicate its new basketball arena during Wednesday's men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Cornerstone University.

SHUMAKER HELPING AQUINAS

Aquinas' women's basketball team is well on its way to its fourth straight winning season. A member of this year's squad is freshman Anne Marie Shumaker, a 2008 Grand Haven High School graduate.

Shumaker, a guard, is averaging 4.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 14 games played for the 11-6 Saints. She is averaging 11.6 minutes per game.
