FRANKLIN — If you see armored trucks rolling through town around 7 p.m. Tuesday, "don't be alarmed."

That's the message from Marine Capt. Clark Carpenter.

The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., will be conducting urban training exercises in Franklin.

Carpenter said residents will hear noise from helicopters and gunfire, but no one will be hurt unless they get too close.

“The operations are taking place in a fairly isolated location. Things might get a little noisy, but curious onlookers should stay away for safety reasons,” said Carpenter, who declined to identify the specific training location.

Carpenter said the 22nd MEU often trains in urban areas because Marines need to learn how to operate in various settings.

“This urban training is important so that Marines will be prepared for real combat situations if called to do so,” he said.

Citizens’ safety is a high concern, Carpenter said.

“I can’t say it enough: If you happen to see the operations, stay back. We don’t want anybody to become hurt inadvertently.”
