FORT HOOD – Anthony Benally and Matthew Chavez are considering futures in the military, thanks to their uncle, Carl Cambridge. They haven't decided which branches yet, but it is likely the Army or Marines, they said.

Cambridge is a specialist in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and returned to Fort Hood Sunday afternoon after more than a year in Iraq. More than 340 regimental troopers returned on Cambridge's flight, and two more flights are scheduled for today.

Benally, who is 16, and Chavez, who is 15, were just two from Cambridge's family who waited for him Sunday at Starker Physical Fitness Center. Ten family members made the nearly 700-mile drive from Rio Rancho, N.M., to Fort Hood for the homecoming. Cambridge's wife and two children were among those who welcomed him home.

It was important for the family to be there, Benally said, because Cambridge would do the same for any of them. Cambridge, who is in his late 20s, was there a lot for the teens when they were growing up, Benally added.

The specialist is the only family member serving in the military now and this was his second deployment to Iraq.

Benally learned a little about Iraq from his uncle. It's windy, it's hot and it's cold at night, he said.

The family plans to stay in town through Tuesday or Wednesday, and they made plans to celebrate Chavez's brother's 16th birthday Sunday night after Cambridge's return.

"We're proud of him," Benally said of Cambridge, adding that he was a good influence on them.
