Deadline for spouse scholarship application coming shortly

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa (January 16, 2009) -- The deadline to submit the Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship application, provided by the National Military Family Association, is Feb. 1.

Spouses of uniformed service members; active duty, National Guard and Reserve, retirees and spouses of deceased service members are eligible to apply. The scholarship funds may be used to assist with tuition fees and school room and board.

The scholarships range from $500-$1,000 and can be used to pursue associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees as well as educational certificates, technical programs and English as a second language classes.

"With the economy the way it is, now is a good time for people to save their money," said Bob Stenard, the supervisory guidance counselor for Marine Corps Bases Japan. "For some, this could be an easy way to make a thousand dollars. Why wouldn't you take advantage of it?"

Many scholarships have several prerequisites, but because the only requirement for this is being a spouse of a service member, it is more convenient to apply for than most, Stenard said.

"Many scholarships have a lot of requirements and can become a hassle to get done. Since you can do the whole application online, it's a fast process, and not doing it would be like turning down $1,000," he said.

The application consists of two writing assignments. The first is a one-to-two sentence response to a question prepared by the association. The second is an essay question that requires a 500-word response.

Spouses interested in applying for the Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship can register at www.NMFA.org or contact their base education center for more information.
