Two local gentlemen's clubs received the Commander's Award after they raised some of the highest totals during the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots holiday drive.

Club Orleans and Baby Dolls raised around $7,000 during the recent toy campaign, said John Samples, owner of both clubs.

"I'm just so proud of our staff," Samples said. "This year the girls really excelled."

The award is given to outstanding achievement in the Toys for Tots drive.

The Marine Corps began the program in 1948 and has grown to a nationwide effort at collecting and distributing toys for lower-income children during the holiday season. The local program serves families in Shawnee County and several neighboring counties.

Samples said he was surprised at the level of giving during the tough economic times. He hypothesized that it may actually have been the slumping economy that pushed people to help more than usual.

He welcomed the good publicity because his clubs aren't always the center of positive news. He said many people have a misconception about his businesses.

"We're not everyone's cup of tea," Samples said.

The award, he said, was just one thing that helped highlight his staff's commitment to helping out the community. Now every time customers enter either Club Orleans or Baby Dolls they will see the 12-inch by 18-inch award plaques as a reminder.
