Lance Cpl. Andrew N. Koenig, son of Patricia and William H. Koenig Jr., of Casper, has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties while serving as a route clearance vehicle operator on a Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, from June 20 to Sept. 1, 2008.

He is a member of the 2nd Division, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines.

He was home on leave in October before returning to Camp Lejeune, N.C. to fulfill the remainder of his four-year commitment in the U.S. Marine Corps.

His citation, presented December 11, states "for more than two months, Lance Cpl. Koenig led route clearance convoys along a main line of communication and other supply lines. Each day, he cleared roughly 24 miles of unimproved roads, covering nearly 2,000 miles of travel within the battalion landing team's area of operations."

"While conducting his duties, he discovered two improvised exploding devices and triggered the detonation of another three. His actions prevented Marine casualties," the citation continued.
