CAMP KINSER, Okinawa — It’s cookie time.

Starting Friday, USA Girl Scouts Overseas will begin selling cookies at $3.50 a box at various military base locations in the western Pacific, officials said Tuesday. The treats will be on sale throughout January and February.

This year, nearly 140,000 boxes were ordered, said Pam Sievers, chief executive of USA Girl Scouts Overseas-West Pacific.

This will also be the first year that Daisy troops, the youngest Girl Scouts at 5 and 6 years old, partner with older girls to sell cookies.

"That’s the beauty of it — the older girls will be mentoring the younger girls," Sievers said.

In all, 54,480 boxes were shipped to Okinawa; 48,600 boxes were sent to mainland Japan: and 35,040 were delivered to South Korea, according to the Army and Air Force Exchange System’s Camp Kinser distribution center.

But if you have a favorite, "get them now ... as some sell out faster," Sievers said.

Thin Mints still rank as the preferred cookie in the West Pacific, but Caramel deLites are a close second, she said.

Girl Scouts have been selling cookies since 1934, but campaigns are about much more than getting cookies to customers.

Robin Miller, membership and marketing director for USA Girl Scouts Overseas, said sales build confidence and teach girls about budgeting, marketing, advertising, customer service and more. All profits will stay in the western Pacific, she said.

Troops will receive a portion of the proceeds for field trips, service projects, camps and other Girl Scout functions, Sievers and Miller said.
